NISTHA RAJ

“Shivranjani” starts simply, with plucked cello and a rhythm played on spoons. But soon, a violin raga joins forces with beatboxer Christylez Bacon in a cultural mash-up between Hindustani and hip-hop. It’s an apt mix for Nistha Raj, a Texas-bred Indian-American who studied violin from the age of nine. Her parents never intended the lessons to grow into a career, but after college Raj secured a scholarship to study traditional music in India. Many tracks on Exit 1 are Raj’s takes on classical Hindustani pieces, but she’s included a Bollywood hit, Carnatic (South Indian) traditional music, and an original track as well. Exit 1 is out February 26 on Nistha Raj’s website.
